Is decaf coffee healthy?

Yes—much like regular coffee, decaf contains antioxidants and protective compounds. Most of the health benefits of coffee also apply to decaffeinated coffee. Solvent residues are far below permissible limits.

Why that is

Many of coffee’s health benefits aren’t due to caffeine, but to the more than 1,000 other compounds—polyphenols, chlorogenic acids, melanoidins, and other antioxidants. These largely remain intact during decaffeination.

What decaf offers for your health:

  • Antioxidants: Decaffeinated coffee contains almost as many antioxidants as regular coffee.
  • Liver protection: Studies show protective effects for decaf as well—reduced risk of liver disease.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Decaffeinated coffee also lowers the risk. So the effect isn’t solely dependent on caffeine.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Polyphenols in coffee have an anti-inflammatory effect—regardless of the caffeine content.

Where decaf acts differently than regular coffee:

  • No wake-up effect — logical, since the caffeine is missing.
  • No blood pressure spike — good for people with hypertension.
  • No impact on sleep — can safely be drunk in the evening.
  • Parkinson’s protection is weaker — caffeine seems to play the crucial role here.

Are solvent residues a problem?

  • The EU allows a maximum of 2 mg/kg of dichloromethane in roasted coffee. In practice, the levels are usually far below that.
  • When roasting at over 200 °C, any solvent residues evaporate completely.
  • Swiss Water and CO₂ methods don’t use any chemical solvents at all.
  • There is no scientific evidence of health risks from solvent residues in decaffeinated coffee.

Who is decaf especially good for?

  • Pregnant and nursing women who love the taste of coffee.
  • People with high blood pressure or cardiac arrhythmias.
  • People sensitive to caffeine.
  • Anyone who wants to drink coffee in the evening.
