Is Arabica Really Better Than Robusta?

Not categorically. Arabica has a more complex flavour spectrum, but high-quality Specialty Robusta can taste excellent. The bad reputation comes from mass production.

Is Arabica Really Better Than Robusta?

Not categorically. Arabica has a more complex flavour spectrum, but high-quality Specialty Robusta can taste excellent. The bad reputation comes from mass production.

Why that matters

The equation “Arabica = good, Robusta = bad” is a persistent marketing myth. Here’s how it started: the majority of global Robusta production goes into instant coffee, cheap blends, and industrial mixes. These beans are often poorly grown, machine-harvested, and badly processed. The result tastes accordingly.

But the species itself isn’t the problem. Robusta, carefully cultivated at higher elevations, hand-picked, and cleanly processed, can develop surprising flavours: chocolate, nuts, caramel, even fruity notes. The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) introduced a dedicated grading scale for “Fine Robusta” in 2010 — scoring above 80 SCA points qualifies Robusta as specialty coffee, just like Arabica.

Arabica has genetically more potential for complex fruit acids and floral notes. That’s due to its higher chromosome count (44 versus 22 in Robusta) and slower growth at altitude. But “more potential” doesn’t automatically mean “better.” A poorly roasted mass-produced Arabica tastes worse than a well-processed Robusta.

Climate change is shifting the discussion further. Arabica is more sensitive to rising temperatures. By 2050, up to 50 % of current Arabica growing regions could become unsuitable. Robusta, more heat-resistant and higher-yielding, will become more important — and with it, the incentive to improve its quality.

At Green Wall Coffee

At our café on Sophienstraße 27 in Berlin-Lichtenberg, we focus on Arabica because our roasters deliver the best lots for our flavour style. Still, I never tell guests that Robusta is “bad.” When an Indian Specialty Robusta becomes available, I offer it as a comparison espresso. The surprise on people’s faces is always the same.
