Is the AeroPress really good for traveling?

Yes — robust (plastic), lightweight (180 g), compact, and makes good coffee in 2 minutes. With a manual grinder and a small scale, you have a complete travel kit. Fits in any backpack, survives drops, needs no electricity.

Why that is

Although the AeroPress wasn’t explicitly designed as a travel coffee maker, its features make it the best option for brewing on the go — better than any other manual method.

Why it’s ideal for travel:

  • Indestructible. The AeroPress is made of polypropylene — tough, food-safe plastic. No glass, no ceramic, nothing that can break. It survives drops, suitcases, and backpack chaos.
  • Compact. The plunger pushes into the cylinder. When nested, the AeroPress is barely larger than a drinking bottle. The paper filters take up zero space.
  • Lightweight. 180 g for the Classic; the AeroPress Go (the travel version) comes with an integrated cup and weighs 326 g.
  • Fast. Setup, brewing, and cleanup take under 3 minutes. No long waiting, no complicated setup.
  • Clean disposal. The coffee puck pops out directly into the trash as a compact cake. No loose, wet grounds like with a French press.
  • No electricity needed. Just hot water — and you can get that anywhere: in a hotel, a guesthouse, on a camping stove, or at an airport café.

The complete travel kit:

  • AeroPress (or AeroPress Go) — €35
  • Manual grinder (e.g., Timemore C2) — €60
  • Small scale (pocket scale, 0.1 g) — €10
  • Fresh beans in an airtight container
  • Paper filters (they fit right into the AeroPress cap or a travel case)

Altogether, the kit weighs less than 500 g and fits in the side pocket of a backpack. In a hotel room, all you need is the kettle, and in 2 minutes you have coffee that is vastly superior to what most hotels serve.

The AeroPress Go is the official travel version: slightly smaller than the Classic, with an integrated cup that also acts as a carrying case. It’s the slightly more compact choice for travelers, but functionally identical.

In practice at Green Wall Coffee

At Sophienstraße 27, I’m well aware of the cult following the AeroPress has as a travel companion — many of our regulars carry one. My tip: Buy your beans before the trip and only grind them on location. We sell 250 g bags that are perfectly sized to last a week of traveling.
