The best uses

As fertilizer in the garden. Coffee grounds contain nitrogen (approx. 2%), potassium, and phosphorus — everything plants need. It slightly lowers the soil’s pH, which acid-loving plants particularly like: hydrangeas, rhododendrons, blueberries, azaleas. Simply sprinkle thinly on the soil and lightly work it in. Do not apply too thickly — otherwise it molds.

As pest repellent. Snails avoid coffee grounds; the caffeine acts as a neurotoxin on them. Sprinkle a ring around endangered plants. Effectiveness decreases after rain, then reapply.

As a body scrub. Coffee grounds mixed with a little olive oil or coconut oil make a natural peeling. The coarse texture removes dead skin cells, the caffeine stimulates blood circulation. Not for the face — too rough for sensitive skin.

Neutralize odors. A bowl of dried coffee grounds in the fridge binds odors — similar to activated carbon. Replace every 1–2 weeks.

Freshen up wooden furniture. Moist coffee grounds on a cloth can conceal light scratches in dark wood. Test on a hidden area first.

What you should avoid

Do not pour coffee grounds down the drain — they clump with fat and clog the pipes in the long run. Also do not use as the sole fertilizer for potted plants — in closed containers, it molds quickly. Apply thinly and let dry, or straight onto the compost.
