Is coffee capsule coffee unecological?

Generally yes — aluminum and plastic single-use capsules create significantly more packaging waste per cup than whole beans. Capsule coffee is also more expensive and often lower in quality.

Why this is so

In Germany, around 3.5 billion coffee capsules are consumed annually. The fundamental problem: every single cup is individually packaged in aluminum, plastic, or a mixture of both.

The waste problem:

  • A capsule weighs 1–3 grams but only contains 5–7 grams of coffee. The ratio of packaging to content is extremely unfavorable.
  • For comparison: 250 grams of whole beans in a paper bag replace 35–40 capsules and produce a fraction of the waste.
  • Many capsules end up in residual waste instead of recycling — even if they are theoretically recyclable.

The recycling promise:

Nespresso takes back aluminum capsules and recycles the material. In practice, the return rate is an estimated 20–30%. The rest ends up in incineration. Compostable capsules (e.g., made of PLA) need industrial composting facilities, which are missing in many regions — they do not decompose in garden compost.

The price:

Capsule coffee costs the equivalent of 60–90 euros per kilogram. For that, you get first-class beans from a specialty roaster. Capsule coffee is mostly industrially roasted, often with a high Robusta content and without indicating the roast date or origin.

In practice at Green Wall Coffee

At Sophienstraße 27, we don’t sell capsules — we sell whole beans and show how easy good coffee is without a capsule. Anyone who has a French press, an AeroPress, or a simple hand grinder doesn’t need a capsule machine. The coffee tastes better, costs less, and produces hardly any waste.
