What is an affogato?

A scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with a hot espresso. An Italian dessert that is both a drink and a sweet treat. The combination of hot and cold, bitter and sweet, creamy and liquid is unique.

Why that is

Affogato means “drowned” in Italian — the ice cream drowns in the espresso. The concept is incredibly simple: a scoop of good vanilla ice cream in a small bowl or glass, a fresh espresso poured over it. Done. No decoration, no complication.

Why it works:

The contrasts are what make the affogato special. Hot espresso meets ice-cold vanilla ice cream — the temperature differences create a taste experience that neither pure espresso nor pure ice cream can offer. The espresso melts the ice cream around the edges, forming a creamy, coffee-infused sauce. The bitterness of the espresso contrasts with the sweetness of the ice cream. The result is simultaneously a dessert and a coffee — and a welcome refreshment in the heat of summer.

Tips for the perfect affogato:

  • Good vanilla ice cream. Real vanilla ice cream with vanilla beans, not “vanilla flavor”. The quality of the ice cream makes up half the experience.
  • Fresh, strong espresso. A double shot works better than a single one — the ice cream dilutes the coffee quickly.
  • Serve and eat immediately. If you wait too long, you’ll have melted ice cream in lukewarm coffee. The affogato thrives on contrast.
  • Variations: Chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla, a splash of amaretto or sambuca, hazelnut ice cream for a nut-coffee kick. Anything goes, but vanilla remains the classic.

Very easy at home: No special equipment needed. Pull an espresso (or use strong moka pot coffee), good ice cream from the freezer, pour over, done. Takes 2 minutes.

In practice at Green Wall Coffee

At Sophienstraße 27, we have the affogato on the menu in the summer — with ice cream from a local Berlin ice cream parlor. It is our most popular dessert and often the entry point for guests who otherwise find espresso too intense.
