What Is Geisha Coffee and Why Is It So Expensive?
Geisha (also Gesha) is an Arabica variety with a floral, tea-like flavour profile. Low yields and record auction prices make it the most expensive coffee in the specialty scene.
Why that is
The Geisha variety was originally collected in the 1930s from the Gesha region of Ethiopia and brought to Central America — as a research plant, not a premium product. For decades, it lay unnoticed on farms in Costa Rica and Panama.
Everything changed in 2004. Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama entered their Geisha coffee at the "Best of Panama" auction — and won with a profile that stunned the jury: jasmine, bergamot, tropical fruits, a tea-like texture. Nothing anyone expected from a coffee. The lot fetched record prices and triggered a global craze.
Since then, Geisha has dominated coffee auctions. At the "Best of Panama" 2023, one lot sold for over US $6,000 per kilogram. In Japan and South Korea, there are cafés selling a single cup of Geisha filter coffee for €50–100.
The price has three causes: first, the Geisha plant produces significantly fewer cherries than comparable varieties — low yield with high maintenance. Second, Geisha grows best above 1,600 metres elevation, which limits growing area. Third, demand is enormous: roasters worldwide bid at auctions to position themselves with a Geisha lot.
Whether the price justifies the flavour is subjective. What's indisputable is that Geisha has an exceptional flavour profile that clearly sets it apart from other varieties. Whether it's worth €50 per cup is something everyone must decide for themselves.
In practice at Green Wall Coffee
We don't carry Geisha at our café on Sophienstraße 27. Our filter coffee comes from the batch brewer. Not everyone has to love Geisha, but if you get the chance, try it once.
Feel free to drop by for a coffee: Sophienstraße 27, Berlin-Lichtenberg. Mon–Fri 8am–5pm, Sat 10am–5pm.
