Does Green Wall Coffee offer reusable cups to take away?
We use the Recup deposit system. The cup costs a one-euro deposit, refunded in full when you return it. A paper cup costs 15 cents and ends up as waste.
How Recup works
Recup is a nationwide deposit system for coffee cups. You pay a one-euro deposit, take the cup with you and return it — to us or to any other café taking part in Recup. The euro is refunded in full. There is no compulsory app, no membership and no fee.
Because the network runs nationwide, you do not have to carry the cup back to us. Hand it in in Kreuzberg and you get your deposit there just the same.
How it differs from a paper cup
A paper cup with lid costs 15 cents, goes in the bin after a single use, and because of its inner coating is harder to recycle than most people assume. The Recup cup — also with a lid — costs nothing in the end, because the deposit comes back.
Arithmetically the reusable cup is therefore the cheaper option for anyone who actually returns it — which is the whole point of a deposit system.
And if I bring my own cup?
We are happy to fill your own cup — there is currently no discount for it, though. The benefit is the waste you avoid, not the price.
In practice at Green Wall Coffee
At our café at Sophienstraße 27 in Berlin-Lichtenberg we ask with every order whether the coffee is for here, for a reusable cup or for a paper cup. It is worth a moment's thought: if you are staying anyway, you need no takeaway cup at all.
