Which Countries Produce the Most Coffee?
Brazil leads with roughly one-third of global production, followed by Vietnam (mainly Robusta), Colombia, Indonesia, and Ethiopia.
Why that matters
Global coffee production in the 2025/26 harvest year stood at around 175 million bags (60 kg each). Brazil alone produces roughly 55–60 million bags — more than Vietnam and Colombia combined. Brazil’s dominance has historical roots: the country invested massively in coffee cultivation from the 19th century onward and has vast, flat growing areas that allow machine harvesting.
Vietnam is the second-largest producer, though almost exclusively Robusta. Coffee farming there was intensified only in the 1990s and grew rapidly. Vietnamese Robusta largely ends up in instant coffee and industrial blends.
Colombia is synonymous with high-quality Arabica. Coffee there is predominantly grown at high altitudes, hand-picked, and washed. The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) created one of the world’s most recognised coffee brands with “Juan Valdez.”
Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi) produces both Arabica and Robusta and is known for earthy, full-bodied profiles. Ethiopia, as coffee’s country of origin, has the greatest genetic diversity and delivers some of the most aromatically interesting coffees in the world — particularly sought after in the specialty scene.
Emerging countries like Honduras, Uganda, and Peru are gaining importance. Honduras is now Central America’s largest coffee producer, Uganda the second-largest in Africa after Ethiopia.
At Green Wall Coffee
The coffees at our café on Sophienstraße 27 in Berlin-Lichtenberg don’t come from the biggest producers but from the best lots our roasters can find. Often that means Ethiopia, Colombia, or Kenya — countries that don’t lead in volume but rank at the top in quality. Volume and quality are two different rankings in coffee.
