Which descaling agent is the right one?

Short Answer: It's best to use the products recommended by the manufacturer — otherwise, the warranty may become void. Universal descalers based on sulfamic acid are gentler on materials than vinegar or citric acid. Always flush completely after descaling.

Which descaling agent is the right one?

It’s best to use the products recommended by the manufacturer — otherwise, the warranty may become void. Universal descalers based on sulfamic acid are gentler on materials than vinegar or citric acid. Always flush completely after descaling.

Why that is

Not all descaling agents are the same. They differ in the acid used, the concentration, and their compatibility with the materials in your coffee machine. The wrong descalers can attack seals, corrode aluminum parts, or leave residue that contaminates the coffee.

Manufacturer’s own descalers:

  • Specifically matched to the materials of the respective machine.
  • Usually use sulfamic acid or lactic acid — gentle and effective.
  • More expensive than household remedies, but safe for the machine.
  • Warranty remains valid.

Universal descalers (e.g., durgol, Urnex):

  • Based on sulfamic acid — gentle on materials and effective.
  • Cheaper than manufacturer products, just as effective.
  • Suitable for most coffee machines.

Citric acid:

  • Dissolves limescale effectively but can form calcium citrate when heated — a white, poorly soluble deposit that further clogs the pipes.
  • Attacks rubber seals.
  • Fine for kettles, not recommended for fully automatic machines.

Vinegar:

  • Dissolves limescale, but the strong smell and taste settle in the machine.
  • Acetic acid is more aggressive than sulfamic acid and can attack seals and aluminum parts.
  • Not recommended for coffee machines.

After descaling: Always run at least two full rinse cycles with clear water. Descaling residue in your coffee doesn’t just taste unpleasant; it can also affect your stomach health.

In practice at Green Wall Coffee

At Sophienstraße 27, we always use the descalers recommended by the manufacturer for our equipment. The price difference compared to household remedies is small, but the safety for the machine is well worth it — a repair costs many times more.
