Should I grease the brew group regularly?
Yes — every 2–6 months with food-safe silicone grease from the manufacturer. When it becomes stiff or squeaks, it's time. A well-greased brew group lasts longer, works more quietly, and prevents expensive repairs.
Should I grease the brew group regularly?
Yes — every 2–6 months with food-safe silicone grease from the manufacturer. When it becomes stiff or squeaks, it’s time. A well-greased brew group lasts longer, works more quietly, and prevents expensive repairs.
Why that is
The brew group is the heart of a fully automatic coffee machine with a removable brewing unit (e.g., Saeco, Philips, Melitta, Krups). It mechanically extends with each shot, compresses the coffee puck, brews, and ejects the grounds. These moving parts need lubrication — without grease, the O-rings and guide rails run dry, wear out, and can break.
Why greasing is important:
- Protect the mechanics. The brew group contains seals, O-rings, and guide rails made of plastic and rubber. Without grease, these parts rub dry against each other and wear out faster.
- Extend lifespan. A regularly greased brew group lasts 8–15 years. Without lubrication, it can fail after 3–4 years.
- Quieter operation. Squeaking or grinding noises when the brew group moves in and out are a clear sign of missing grease.
- Avoid repair costs. A new brew group costs 60–120 euros plus installation. A small bottle of silicone grease costs 5–8 euros and lasts for years.
How to do it:
- Remove the brew group (see manual for instructions).
- Rinse under warm water without detergent and let it dry.
- Apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the guide rails, the piston, and the O-rings. A little goes a long way — a thin film is enough.
- Reinsert the brew group and run the machine through a dummy cycle.
Important: Only use food-safe silicone grease — no Vaseline, no machine oil, no WD-40. These products are not food-safe and can attack the seals.
Machines without a removable brew group (e.g., Jura) are lubricated internally — here, the manufacturer’s service handles the maintenance. Regularly run cleaning tablets through and call customer service if necessary.
In practice at Green Wall Coffee
At Sophienstraße 27, we maintain all equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions. My advice to fully automatic machine owners: greasing the brew group takes 5 minutes every few months — and saves hundreds of euros in repairs in the long run.
