What is Green Wall Coffee?

By Norbert Ahnsorge (Inhaber) · Published · updated

Green Wall Coffee is a specialty coffee café at Sophienstraße 27 in Berlin-Lichtenberg, opened in May 2022 by Norbert Ahnsorge. It is the first specialty coffee shop in Lichtenberg.

How it came about

The starting point was a simple idea, and Norbert still tells it the same way:

"I really just wanted to build a small café where the coffee has the quality I would want for myself. What it became is a place where people meet, get to know each other, talk — and drink coffee together."

In 2022 Lichtenberg had no specialty coffee shop. Green Wall Coffee is the first in the district — not as a calculated gap in the market, but because what Norbert wanted to drink himself was not available within walking distance.

Who is behind it

Norbert Ahnsorge is the owner. He decides which coffees make it onto the shelf, what value the water is set to, and how the machine is worked.

What defines the café

Two things shape the place more than the drinks menu does.

First, consistency in the craft: treated water at a defined target value and no surcharge for milk alternatives or decaf.

Second, conversation. Nobody works on devices in the front room — that space is for talking. That is what produced the thing Norbert describes in the quote above: a place where people actually get to know one another. The café is also host to the Coffee Run Club.

In practice at Green Wall Coffee

The café at Sophienstraße 27 in Berlin-Lichtenberg is small: 16 seats in the front, six in the back room, eight outside under the awning. That size is not a compromise — it is the condition that makes the place work.
